ELLIE'S BIRTH STORY: PART 2

I thought for sure we'd be meeting our third baby on Jan 23rd (a day early!) when I woke up to mild, but regular contractions. I stayed in bed as long as I could, but between the excitement and contractions every 5 minutes, I wasn't sleeping! So I picked up the living room, cleaned the bathroom, and was doing the dishes when Dan woke up. After sending him to the grocery (at 5am!) I called my midwife and my mom.

When my mom arrived a few hours later ready to see Caleb off to school and spend the morning with Abel, contractions had all but stopped! They were now irregular and anywhere from 10-20 mins apart. Total defeat set in. Dan decided to work from home and I went back to bed, though I didn't really sleep.

Around noon, I talked with my midwife and we both figured it just wasn't time. I took a bath, drank a glass of wine, and crashed on the couch for a few hours.  My mom decided to take the boys home with her, to allow us more time to just relax, should baby decide to come.

Early evening the contractions returned and built with some intensity. At roughly 10 minutes apart I once again was hopeful that this was it, but not overly optimistic.

By midnight the contractions we're every 8 minutes, but intense enough that we weren't sleeping. My sweet hubby suggested that we get up and move around the house to try to speed things up.  After two hours of endless laps around our tiny house, contractions were now every 2-3 minutes! We called our midwife and she headed right over. Things were finally moving along.

I labored for what felt like days, walking laps, taking a shower, catching catnaps literally in every room of our house. I could not get comfortable and felt that little progress was happening.

Finally at about 8am, while my midwife was administering a second dose of antibiotics for GBS (which I had tested positive for), we talked about what to do next. She offered to check me and see if she could break my waters which might help speed things up. No sooner than I had agreed with her, my water broke (at 8:07am) on its own - while she's still pushing in the antibiotics!  She quickly finished up the antibiotics and  I sat back to let the nurse check that the waters were clear and she immediately noticed that baby was descending. I thought I'd just lay down to rest for a minute while my midwife switched places with the nurse (knowing the hard part of pushing was ahead of me)...as I did, my body completely took over and literally pushed Ellie out on it's own! I can remember looking at my midwife, saying "I can't stop, I'm not pushing."

It was less than a minute from the time her head emerged to her snuggling on my chest! She was born just 5 minutes after my water broke at 8:12am, on her due date, January 24th!!!

Sweet Eleanor June, rocked our world the moment she arrived! I spent weeks in shock that I had a daughter.  Still today, I sometimes look at her and marvel over the fact that I get to be the mama of this sweet GIRL! She brings so much JOY and LIFE to our lives.

ELLIE'S BIRTH STORY: PART 1

I've desperately wanted to share our sweet daughter's birth story for over a year now, but could never quite find the right words.  To tell her story, we have to go back two years.....

November 2016.  During our annual anniversary, Dan and I talked at length about the next few years. We were eager to get started in buying more real estate and decided that we'd widen our parameters in include possibly moving our little family.  While we loved our little blue house, I was struggling with being home alone all day with our littles and not being near friends.  They had been working on our sewer connection for months and we couldn't even enjoy playing in our own yard. Dan's job kept him away sometimes 80+ hours a week making it hard to fit in housework.  We knew a move would help ease some of the stresses we were both dealing with, so we were open to it.

During the month of December, we looked at real estate daily....we visited and put offers in on a number of potential rentals, but nothing was panning out. Discouraged, we poured our energy into making some updates to our home - fresh paint + simple repairs. By the end of the year we felt like maybe we were supposed to just settle into our home for a few more years, but neither one of us were ready to give up.

Near the end of January I got a call from Dan one morning asking if I had time to come see a foreclosure he and our realtor had just learned about.  I literally loaded up the boys and went to meet him at the house.  This particular foreclosure was only available for "Owner Occupancy", which meant the owner had to move into the house and live there for at least a year.  So the question was - Is it worth moving our family across town, into the city? And could we live in this SMALL house for a year?  (it's important to note that the house is less than 900 sq ft and only 2 bedrooms).  As we were leaving we wrote up an offer - and within days we had a closing date.  Two weeks later we got the keys to Our Little Green Bungalow!

It was a whirlwind, completely unexpected, but completely exhilarating! We were finally taking steps to financial freedom and we had this awesome adventure for the four of us for the next year.

-----

During this time, Dan and I were both struggling with our desire to grow our family but felt it wasn't the right time.  Dan's job kept him away so much he barely got to see the boys, and we'd just bought a house so all his free time was spent getting it ready for us to move into.  Despite my inner desire, I was home alone with our two boys all day and felt ill-equipped to add more children to the mix.  Then there was the financial burden - we were already living on a single income.  While we were able to pay the bills, there wasn't much extra to save or invest what we desired!  We both felt like we had this heavy decision to make but didn't want to!  I remember one night near the end of February, just letting go and turning it all over to God - praying that if we were meant to grow our family that it would be in God's timing and not ours...and if we weren't supposed to grow our family that God would grant us peace about it.  Over the coming weeks as we dove deeper into house renovations, I was overcome by an incredible sense of peace and contentment about our family.

-----

May 2017. It took months to finish the house and get it to a livable state (gas and plumbing issues took far longer than anticipated!) but by mid-May we were moving! The night we moved in, I remember sitting on our front porch soaking in our new neighborhood. We talked about the walks we'd take on the trail and to the park.  How we'd visit downtown more often now that we were just minutes away.  We were both filled with joy and excitement just thinking about sharing this season of city life with our boys.  It was in that moment that I confessed to Dan that while putting this photo on the mantel that afternoon, I just couldn't shake the idea that someone was missing....that there was room for one more.  He looked at me like I was crazy - we'd literally just downsized - moved our family for four into a small 2 bedroom house.  Meanwhile I was recounting the past two weeks of feeling "off".  I had chalked it up to the stress and craziness of the moving process, but deep down wondered if maybe I was pregnant.

The next morning, I was the first one awake and decided to go ahead and take a pregnancy test to just clear my mind. I fully expected it to be negative - knowing that the stress and chaos of moving could have caused the types of symptoms I was experiencing.  So imagine my surprise when it was positive! I remember just sitting there staring at the test, working my way through every emotion of excitement, worry, fear, joy, frustration, surprise....I was anxious to break the news to Dan, especially after the conversation we'd had the night before.  I was a ball of nerves as I carried the test into the bedroom, unsure really what to say, but smiled through tears as I told him.  He just looked at me, his eyes full of joy and love and said "I guess we're going to need a bigger house" - and we both burst into laughter!

-----

The next 9 months were by far some of the most difficult and exhilarating of our lives.  Dan's job went from bad to worse that summer and we rarely saw him -- when he wasn't at work he was at our old house getting it ready to rent.  By the end of July, we both felt broken and beat down - I lived in fear of what the future of our family would look like, I worried about his health, our boys missing their daddy, how to take care of a baby and older children by myself.  The days were incredibly long.

Then, miraculously, something shifted. The last day of July my Young Living business hit an incredible milestone - one I'd spent the past 3 years working towards.  The next day our first house was officially rented and by the end of that first week of August, Dan was in the midst of interviewing for a new job! August was full and busy for us, but we were finally feeling lighter and happier.  By the middle of the month Dan accepted a new job and was set to start September 1st. We spent the last week of August on vacation with Dan's family and it felt like the perfect way to celebrate ending a difficult season and get excited for all that lay ahead in the next.

Despite being my third child, I had a lot of fear about pregnancy and caring for older children.  I desperately wanted to keep up with the boys but by late November I hit a wall.  I was in excruciating pain being on my feet and ended up spending much of the holiday season laying on the couch.  It really took a toll on me emotionally!  I struggled daily to hold on to that light, joy and happiness we'd just regained.  As my due date approached I was eager to meet our little one, but again fear and worry crept in.  I had had a January baby before and knew that the weeks and months of dark dreary days could easily keep me down, and I desperately wanted to enjoy the postpartum season this time.

I knew I needed to be proactive and set intentions for the upcoming season - so I told anyone who would listen that I was going to do nothing but rest and care for my baby for at least 6 weeks. I asked, begged, for people to hold me accountable and call me out if I tried to bounce back too quickly.  I prepped meals, and made plans for friends and family to care for the boys so I could rest.  All the planning and preparing really helped to brighten my spirits as I waited for baby's arrival.

    dear abel // 15 months

    Dear Abel,

The past 15 months have been challenging and stretching, but so full of joy, love, and laughter.  You are mama's boy, through and through.  You must know where mama is at all times...and if mama's in sight, you must be touching her!  We love your adorable sense of humor and your go with the flow attitude (again as long as mama's near you're happy to go anywhere!).  You're strong and stubborn, which is a great skill when interacting with your big brother - you can hold your own just fine!  That sweet smile of yours is so contagious, but you are not afraid to voice your opinion about anything.  You love to climb and explore, if it's off limits, you're ready to check it out.  We often find you on top of the kitchen table finishing up someone's leftovers, or attempting to climb a latter or standing on top of the couch...you name it, you've tried to scale it! We love your sense of adventure!  Keep growing and exploring, little one.

    Love,
    mama & daddy

    Fall family fun.

This season of parenting has really pushed Dan and I to slow down in life.  Lazy days spent at home with our boys are quickly becoming our favorite way to spend the weekend!  These are the moments I want to remember with our little family....the moments we slowed down and really took each other in.

    baby registry 101

Baby registries can be overwhelming!  Thankfully when we found out we were pregnant with Caleb, our dear friend Ellen sent us a fabulous list of items she used with her two boys.  She broke down the list into three categories by necessity which made this overwhelmed mama-to-be a whole lot more relaxed!  Because we have similar personalities and lifestyles I knew that if she didn't use a particular "must have" gadget, I probably wasn't going to either.

Now that my sister-in-law is pregnant with her first, I thought it'd be helpful to share an updated list based on our experience.  It's so easy to get overwhelmed with options pre-baby and you have no idea what will really work and what is a waste of money.  Everything here I would highly recommend.  I've stared items that would make great gifts for any new mama.

These are must haves in my book!

the first years true fit car seat  - we bought a convertible one that will last from infant-booster. Everyone says how nice/convenient it is to have the bucket seat you can take in and out, but it only lasts a year (if that!), then you have to buy another seat. There might have been once or twice this past year that I wished I had one, but that's it!

fisher price rock 'n play sleeper - we used this as a bassinet for Caleb for nearly 6 months.

davinci jenny lind 3-in-1 convertible crib - we opted for a 3-in-1 option that goes from crib to toddler bed to twin.

gerber prefold cloth diapers - these make the very best burp cloths.  They're not exactly stylish, but are so much more absorbent (and affordable) than the cute ones!

bumGenius 4.0 one-size cloth diapers - we used cloth diapers, which is super easy these days- plus if you put it all on your registry, then you don’t spend much, if any on diaper stuff for 2 years (besides some wipes, and a few things of throw-away for times you don’t want to deal with carrying around dirty diapers). We transitioned to cloth diapers at around two weeks.  Though we've tried a variety of cloth diapers, these have been our absolute favorite with Caleb. The world of cloth diapers is a bit overwhelming, as there are now tons of choices, learn more about our cloth diapering experience here.

*clothes - Caleb lived in sleepers for the first few months of life.  We loved these sleepers that zip from the bottom up making it easier to change diapers.  Baby clothes are super cute, but honestly Caleb didn't wear much other than sleepers and onsies for the first six months, so having a bunch of "cute" outfits wasn't really practical for us.

*rockin' green classic rock cloth diaper detergent - if you're going to do cloth diapers, it's essential that you have the proper laundry detergent to get them super clean.  There are lots of DIY recipes out there, but until you get your routine down and learn more about your particular water and washing machine, I highly recommend buying a commercial detergent to get you started.

*california baby shampoo/body wash - we have been using the same large bottle of baby shampoo/body wash for more than a year!  I especially like the unscented version.  It doesn't take much of this and less is more when using soap on baby's sensitive skin!

*lifefactory glass baby bottles - whether or not you plan to bottle feed, it's nice to have a few on hand "just in-case".  I love these glass bottles as they have interchangeable lids that go from sippy cup to water bottle over time.  Side note: I highly suggest having (or having access to) a breast pump.  Check with your insurance as often they'll cover some, if not all, of the cost for new mamas!

aden + anais muslin swaddle blanket we have eight of these. They are super lightweight and perfect for wrapping baby up, throwing over the carseat, laying down on a public restroom changing table, nursing cover, blocking sun while in the car, and they're even absorbent enough to use as a burp cloth!!  We are still using these almost daily!

These items were great for us, but not necessary for everyone.

*chicco travel seat hook on chair - this one attaches to your table, or a stand alone chair and comes in a protable carrying case, so you can take it anywhere- even camping and put it on a picnic table!  We used this exclusively for the first year, first on the table and later, when he got too heavy for our little table we attached it to a chair.

stokke tripp trapp highchair - Caleb received this as a gift for his birthday and we love it!  It's made of wood, easy to clean, and adapts to fit the baby perfectly over time.  I also love that it doesn't clash with our kitchen!  A worthwhile investment that you'll get years of wear out of!

graco fastAction fold jogger stroller - At some point your baby will decide (or you will decide for them) that you don’t want to carry the little guy/girl all of the time, or it is super hot, or you have a 2nd kid, you know… So, you may need one of these. The more versatile, the better! This stroller is rugged enough for rough terrain, yet light weight enough that even I (at 5 months pregnant) can put it in the trunk with ease!

*ergo baby original baby carrier - this is, hands down, the most used baby item we own.  We did not start using it until Caleb was 4-5 months old, but it was a must for getting our boy to sleep when we were out and about.  It's perfect for grocery shopping, traveling, or just to help get mama hands-free to make dinner.  Best part is Dad loves to wear it too!

*moby wrap original baby carrier - we didn't get the Ergo carrier until Caleb was a few months old, and because we opted not to get a bucket carseat, we needed a way to carry our boy around.  We loved using the mobi wrap when Caleb was a newborn.  I loved how close he was when wearing the wrap - and he slept so soundly when in it!  The downside to this wrap is there's a learning curve in putting it on and unlike the Ergo, it's not a quick on/off type carrier.

*graco sweet slumber sound machine - white noise has been a sleep saver for us.  Early on we realized how difficult it was for Caleb to fall asleep - he's super easily distracted and so curious that he couldn't calm himself and shut out all the noise.  We purchased this after we moved upstairs and it's been a blessing as Caleb's bedroom is right off of the kitchen.  It's hard to do much in our small house while he sleeps without making much noise, but with this sound machine, we're able to drown out some of that racket.

*summer infant swaddleMe organic swaddle wrap - Caleb loved being swaddled at night.  He has always been a good sleeper - sleeping through the night at about 6 weeks - but would often struggle to calm himself enough to actually fall asleep, swaddling helped tremendously!  We used these until about 7 months when he was just too wiggly to keep them on.  The velcro makes them a breeze to change diapers in the night too!

These items came in handy those first few months, but are far from necessities to me, just nice to have.

summer infant best view digital color video monitor - we shared a room with Caleb until about 8 months, but once we moved upstairs, it was important to me to be able to hear AND see him in the night.  This monitor helped ease my anxiety and helped me get a good nights rest because I could turn the volume up but the video off.  And if I woke up in the night I could just peak in on him via the camera instead of opening his door and risk waking him up!

*boppy pillow - I could never quite get the hang of nursing with this pillow, so we didn't use it as much as I thought we would.  However, it did come in handy when Caleb was starting to sit up and we used it as a support for tummy time.

fisher price bouncer - at some point you're going to need to put the baby down...you know go to the bathroom, shower, change the laundry, make dinner, etc....and that's when this seat came is really handy for us.  Caleb especially loved it when he started to move more and could make it bounce on his own.  I love that it's so light weight, making it easy to transfer from room to room and even out onto the porch.

*brica fold n' go travel bassinet - I thought we'd use this far more than we did.  We brought it outside a few times, but mostly we used it when traveling to visit family.  It's easy to fold and store - takes up very little precious cargo space - and makes a nice safe sleeping space for baby.

*books and toys - Everyone loves to buy baby gifts, especially toys!  We limit battery powered obnoxious toys in our house and encourage people to buy wooden toys vs. plastic and books are always welcome!  Some of our favorites during the first few months were wooden teethers, grasping toys, and indestructible books.

    Caleb's Montessori-Inspired Bedroom

This room is FAR from decorated in the way that I ever expected to decorate my child's bedroom.  While I was pregnant I had loads of ideas for decorating our little guy's nursery.  Unfortunately, the three of us shared this room until February when we finally finished the upstairs and by then I had a crawling baby who was into everything and decorating was the last thing on my mind!

Over the past year I've done a lot of research on the Montessori style of education and have really gravitated toward her simplicity of the environment in which you raise your children.  The past few months, I've done my best to transform this space into the perfect Montessori-inspired bedroom for our little man.

My goal in "decorating" Caleb's room has been less about the aesthetic and more about function and giving our boy independence.  With a floor bed, he's able to get into and out of bed without help or fear of injury.  The shelves are low and house only those toys he's able to play with without supervision.  The entire room is kid friendly and baby proof!

About a month ago, we introduced the floor bed mostly because our boy was getting heavier and it was harder for this pregnant mama to put him into his crib.  It took us about a week to make the transition, but he took to the floor bed beautifully! (currently our floor bed is just a crib mattress on the floor)

The low shelves are perfect for allowing Caleb access to the toys in his room.  Each shelf houses only one item and we're working on teaching him to return the items to their "home" when he's finished.  Toys like blocks are kept in baskets to keep them visible yet organized.

We recently added a wall decal chalk board on one wall and he LOVES it.  I used a command hook to hang a bucket of chalk and eraser that I can remove during naptime/bedtime.  It's so fun to see him "write/draw" all my himself   Near the chalkboard is a clock (which he no longer messes with), and I hope to add some photos of family to be down at his level as well.

Caleb loves, loves, loves books!  So we have a few baskets of books around the room as well.  He has loads of board books and has begun to enjoy looking at them alone.  Sometimes we'll find books in bed with him in the morning as if he'd been reading them throughout the night!

Though the room isn't 100% Montessori, I think that it's an over all calming and relaxing room that we all enjoy spending time in.  Caleb has taken to the independence and enjoys the freedom to make the decision when he's tired or wants to play.

We love that he no longer wakes up crying and yelling to be let out of his crib, he now just plays quietly until we are able to come get him.  Caleb's new room is perfect for our curious little toddler!!
